Card Declined - eBay Email Scam
3rd January 2004
This aw-confirm@ebay email is a scam ...
This spoof email takes the form of
a text email with a disguised
link (see image below).
The email text states that your credit card was declined
when 'eBay' attempted to charge it. This is of-course, a complete fabrication,
and using the disguised link will result in a forged
eBay page appearing
in your browser (see images below).
The link is disguised to
appear to be a genuine ebay.com link, but it actually sends you to http://213.122.85.155.
See our article for more about disguised
links. This IP address resolves to British Telecom Internet and
therefore has nothing to do with eBay at all.
If you have received this hoax email, please remember that it is very common
for these email scams to be redistributed at a later date with only slightly
different content or the same but with the fake page(s) hosted by a different
provider. Also, once you have received one of these hoaxes, it is also common
place to receive at least another one and usually a day or two after the first,
although not necessarily from the same apparent sender.
