eBay Security Measures: Verify your identity - Email Scam
6th & 10th January 2004
Is eBay really performing regular maintenance of
their security measures? -
Not this time, its a scam ...
This spoof email takes the form of
a fake eBay form (see image below).
The red text at the top of the form states that you
must use the form to update your account due to regular maintenance of
their security measures. This is of-course, a
complete fabrication, and using the bogus form will result in any data
entered being forwarded to the scammers.
We found that the email had been coded to send this
form data to the scammers at a Yahoo email address in both cases (kostas_ro@yahoo.com or
mariuses2004@yahoo.es) via a form to mail processing service offered by server-mail.com.
This would occur blindly and while your browser opens the genuine eBay.com
sign in page.
If you have received this hoax email, please remember
that it is very common for these email scams to be redistributed at a later
date with only slightly different content or the same but with the fake
page(s) hosted by a different provider. Also, once you have received one
of these hoaxes, it is also common place to receive at least another one
and usually a day or two after the first, although not necessarily from
the same apparent sender. |
