PAYPAL.COM NEW YEAR OFFER - Email Scam with paypal.zip file attachment
16th January 2004
A particularly nasty Worm Virus will steal your
credit card details if you fall for this scam ...
This Paypal spoof email takes the form of a text message
(see image below) and carries the subject line of
PAYPAL.COM NEW YEAR OFFER. It also contains a file attachment
named paypal.zip which you are asked to open in order
to register for a New Year money give away. This New Year offer is of-course
a complete hoax, but the file attachment is a very clever worm virus .....
The file attachment contains a variant of the Mimail
mass mailing worm. This worm has been reported to open forged Paypal
web style pages in windows which present the viewer with forms to provide
Credit Card information including the PIN as well as name and address,
SSN, etc. If information is provided and submitted in these forms,
the worm stores them in file on yur computer and then sends them to a prepared
email address for the perpetrators.
Distribution of the Mimail worm is rated as high by
the antivirus software publishers, and given the many forms it has taken
up until now, we expect to see many more of these email hoaxes. Please
warn those around you, as the uninformed are most at risk. Building awareness
is the main objective of this site. |

If
you have received this email, please remember that it
is very
common for these email scams to be redistributed at a
later date
with only slightly different content or the same but with the fake
page(s) hosted by a different provider. Also, once you have received one of
these hoaxes, it is also common place to receive at least another one
and usually a day or two after the first, although not necessarily from
the same apparent sender. Take
