eBay - Safety Measure - Please Confirm You Account - Spoof Email Phishing Scam
28th February 2004
A genuine looking eBay sign in page hits
mail boxes in this Phishing Scam ...
read also our brief guide to Phishing
This spoof eBay email (see image below) is a forgered eBay
sign in page.
We found that any information entered into this form and
submitted is processed through a script located within a Lycos (UK) user's web
space. When we checked, we found that the user's daily quota of 150 processes
had been reached within the first 12 hours, so some of us are falling for this
scam.
We cannot emphasis strongly enough that eBay would NOT send
such a page to its users. If you receive any request for action form any site,
do not follow links or fill forms in an email. You should instead, manually type
the URL of the site in question, log in and interact with your account that way,
and that way alone. If there really is a genuine need to take any action, you
will be requested to do so once you are 'signed in' in this way. If you have received this email, please remember that it is very common for these
email scams to be redistributed at a later date with only slightly different
content or the same but with the fake page(s) hosted by a different provider.
Also, once you have received one of these hoaxes, it is also common place to
receive at least another one and usually a day or two after the first, although
not necessarily from the same apparent sender. |
