" Dear AOL member:
It has come to our attention that your AOL Billing information's records are
out of date."...
This
spoof AOL email (see below) is in text only format and inlcudes a link which
you are urged to use to update your information to prevent account termination.
The link does, of-course, lead to a bogus AOL web page, and one which contains
a form to provide information (see image below). There are further pages after
the one we have shown below which also require information including your name,
address, credit or debit card details, etc.
Any information submitted is
processed through a PHP script located on the same server as the bogus content.
The URL could be conceived as being directly related to AOL by the undiscerning
user, but it in fact resolves to web space provided by US company Interland and
is registered to an individual also in the US - clearly nothing to do with AOL
at all. If you have received this email, please remember that it is very
common for these email scams to be redistributed at a later date with only slightly
different content or the same but with the fake page(s) hosted by a different
provider. Also, once you have received one of these hoaxes, it is also common
place to receive at least another one and usually a day or two after the first,
although not necessarily from the same apparent sender.
