1. Email claims to be from WAMU asking you to confirm your account data by clicking on the link. You will be taken to a spoof login page where your details will be captured by the phishers.

2. WAMU never send users emails requesting details in this way.

3. Website traced to Sofia, Bulgaria

4. Spoof URL disguised as https://login.personal.wamu.com/logon/logon.asp?dd=1

5. URL looks secure (https://) but it is not, and any details you send will be sent unencrypted over the web, as well as straight into the hands of the phishers.

6. Spoof URL is very obviously not related to WAMU, so be alert!

" Dear Washington Mutual customer, We recently have determined that different computers have logged onto your Online Banking account"

If you have received this email, please remember that it is very common for these email scams to be redistributed at a later date with only slightly different content or the same but with the fake page(s) hosted by a different provider. Also, once you have received one of these hoaxes, it is also common place to receive at least another one and usually a day or two after the first, although not necessarily from the same apparent sender.

The Spoof Email ...

Dear Washington Mutual customer,

We recently have determined that different computers have logged onto your Online Banking account, and multiple password failures were present before the logons. We now need you to re-confirm your account information to us. If this is not completed by December 10, 2004, we will be forced to suspend your account indefinitely, as it may have been used for fraudulent purposes. We thank you for your cooperation in this manner.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and appreciate your assistance in helping us maintain the integrity of
the entire Washington Mutual system. Thank you for attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

The Washington Mutual Team
