AOL spoof email hoax and fake web page scam

This AOL email hoax has been in distribution from 18th October 2003 and we also have an image of the fake web page that it sends you to. These are just images of the originals, so there is absolutely no code included and none of the links or buttons will now work. Hoax emails and forged web pages like these regularly get redistributed, so read on and beware, it could reach your inbox soon.

The Spoof Email Hoax...

The email hoax states that AOL recently made a charge to your credit card which failed and requests that you update your account information. The email shows a link, but the link is disguised (cloaked) and is not indicative of where you will end up if you use it. The link will in fact lead you to a forged AOL web page...

The Fake AOL Web Page...

The hoax web page looks like a genuine AOL page. It is clearly apparent that the page is spoofed when you see the URL/web address in your browser's address bar.

which is hosted by valueweb.net (a frequent source of fake web pages)

This hoax AOL web page contains a form for you to provide your AOL user ID and password, credit card information, bank details, etc...

If you provide this information and submit it, it is captured using PHP script by the scammers while you are sent to a genuine AOL page.
